World Mental Health Day: Prioritising Well-being

Every year on 10th October, the world comes together to recognise World Mental Health Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness of mental health issues and promoting well-being. The theme this year focuses on the importance of ensuring mental health care for all.

All CarmichaelUK office staff are mental health first aiders and are available to assist our site operatives or colleagues who need help by signposting them to the support that is available to them. You can call us if you need help on 0208 522 8888 and ask to speak to a mental health first aider.

Whether it's stress, anxiety, or burnout, mental health struggles are common, and one in four of us are affected at any time.  However, there are some things you can do to help yourself and we've set out some tips below that might be useful.

Tips for Looking After Your Mental Health:

  • Talk About Your Feelings: Sharing how you feel with someone you trust can provide relief and a new perspective. It’s not a sign of weakness; it’s a step toward well-being.

  • Reframe Unhelpful Thoughts: The way we think, feel and behave are linked. Sometimes we develop patterns of thoughts or behaviours that are unhelpful so recognising them, and taking steps to think about things differently, can improve your mental health and well being.

Stay Active: Regular physical activity is not just good for your body, its also good for your mind. Exercise releases endorphins which are natural chemicals that improve your mood.

  • Eat Well: A balanced diet helps fuel both your body and brain. Try to include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your meals for a stable mood.

  • Take Breaks: Life can get overwhelming. Taking time to pause, whether it’s a quick walk outside or a longer vacation, can prevent burnout and refresh your mind.

  • Sleep Well: Prioritise a good night’s sleep. Lack of sleep can negatively impact your mood, concentration, and energy levels. Create a calming bedtime routine to unwind.

  • Set Realistic Goals: Don’t overload yourself with expectations. Break tasks into smaller steps and celebrate your progress, no matter how small.

  • Seek Professional Help: If things feel overwhelming, speaking with a mental health professional can make a huge difference. Therapy is a proactive step toward understanding and managing mental health challenges.

  • Be Kind: You need to be kind to yourself in the same way you would to those you care about. (Kindness is free - pass it on !!)
