Friday 10th September is World Suicide Prevention Day.
World Suicide Prevention Day aims to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003.
This year’s theme, which will be the theme until 2023, is ‘Creating Hope Through Action’, which aims to empower people with the confidence to engage with the complexity of ‘hope’.
Mental Health First Aid
At CarmichaelUK, over 65% of our staff are fully qualified Mental Health First Aiders.
The course covers many important topics, including a session on suicide and how to approach a situation where a person is experiencing suicidal thoughts. As part of the training course, Mental Health First Aiders are taught an important 5 part Action plan called ALGEE, which is as follows:
A - Approach the person, assess and assist with any crisis
L - Listen and communicate non-judgementally
G - Give support and information
E - Encourage the person to get appropriate professional help
E - Encourage other supports
