What’s it like being LGBT in Engineering?

Last week, our Celebrate Champions attended a preview screening of a new video series profiling successful LGBT engineers. The evening was organised by InterEngineering and included a number of speeches about the importance of diversity and inclusion in the industry.

Over 20 videos have been produced, all featuring LGBT engineers talking openly about their experiences of the profession and sharing their personal stories. The aim is to show those thinking of becoming engineers that being LGBT is not a barrier to a happy and successful career.

CarmichaelUK Client Manager, Helen Egner said: “The event was a good opportunity to talk not only about the importance of being able to be open about a person’s sexuality but also diversity in general. In an industry with a fully acknowledged forthcoming skills shortage inspiring more people to join is imperative to deliver projects. Using role models to talk about their experiences is really informative and breaks down barriers leading to greater transparency.”

CarmichaelUK’s Celebrate programme is designed to address equal and inclusive recruitment for candidates in the construction and engineering industry. Click here to learn more about our journey to becoming an LGBT employer.
