How much experience does CarmichaelUK have in placing Aussies and Kiwis in the UK?
For more than 20 years we have been placing travelling Aussies and Kiwis on major projects in the United Kingdom. Many of our consultants are Australians and Kiwis and have made the journey that you are currently thinking about – they can recommend the best places to live and work and advise on what you can do yourself before you leave in order to make the transition as smooth as possible.
What sectors does CarmichaelUK specialise in?
We work across the civils, construction, highways and rail sectors. In particular, we specialise in providing contract and permanent recruitment services at all levels nationwide across the UK and Ireland. We mainly work with top-tier contractors on the most iconic projects currently taking place in the UK.
What are the advantages of working as a contractor?
Contract work gives you the opportunity to work on more than one major project during your stay here for a long or short period of time paid on an hourly or day rate. The rate is generally more than you would receive if you were permanently employed. You’ll earn a good salary and be able to take holidays between projects for those all-important trips to Europe and other countries so close to the UK. You will also be able to build your CV by adding a portfolio of the most prestigious projects currently happening in the UK.
Can CarmichaelUK help me with a permanent position?
Of course. If you prefer the stability of permanent work and hold an EU or ancestry passport then we can certainly assist with permanent work too.
What can I expect if I take a contract position with CarmichaelUK?
We always stay in close contact with our candidates to ensure that you are happy in your role. When one contract is coming to an end we will work with you to ensure that you can move to a new contract subject to your flexibility and location preferences. All the CarmichaelUK contractors are invited to regular contractor events and Christmas parties. You will be provided with access to our Hummingbird Contractors portal which provides updates on projects, discounts for goods and services, access to medicals, online health and safety reporting, and a wellbeing centre to help you to manage your welfare.
What projects do CarmichaelUK contractors get involved with?
Some of the projects that our contractors have worked on over our 20 plus year history include the London Millennium Dome, Channel Tunnel Rail Link (HS1), the London Olympics, Crossrail including Stations and London Bridge, Tottenham Court Road and Victoria Stations. Our Contractors have also been involved with Heathrow Terminal 5, Birmingham and Bristol Airports, and various motorway reconstructions throughout the country.
What future projects will CarmichaelUK contractors be involved with?
Future projects that we are recruiting for include High Speed 2 (HS2) London to Birmingham, Hinkley Point C Power Station, and London Airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted. We are also working on managed motorways nationwide including the A14 project which is the largest highways project in Europe.
Should I aim to work in London or one of the other big cities in the UK?
We have four offices in the UK in London, Oxfordshire, Warrington and Birmingham and we cover the whole of the UK and Ireland from these bases. Traditionally London is the city that most Aussies and Kiwis select as their entry point, however, other cities in the UK can offer excellent work opportunities as well as cheaper rents and cheaper general living expenses. Birmingham is our second city and is offering fabulous opportunities to be involved on HS2 which is the most prestigious rail project in the UK and will last for many years.
Where can I earn the most money in the UK?
For the last 7 years, London has been the hot spot for most of the best-paid work because of the Crossrail project and the shortage of engineers. However, with Crossrail coming to an end, going forward the work will be much more regionally balanced and rates will be commensurate with the location and complexity of the project. Central London will continue to have vacancies but they may be contested due to the supply of Crossrail engineers entering the market. We would recommend being flexible about location as there are many high profile projects outside of London that would significantly enhance your CV.
I really want to live in London. Could I commute to a project outside of London?
Definitely. We have a number of projects that are a commutable distance from London and with HS2 coming on stream and Crossrail ending we will see more additional prospects outside of London. We operate a fleet of site vehicles and on some projects, we are able to provide transport.
