Civil engineers deal with the design, planning, construction and maintenance of project builds, such as roads, bridges, buildings and tunnels. As a civil engineer you may be based at an office or on site, depending on the job in hand.
As you’re part of a project, you’ll be working alongside other construction professionals, so you’ll get an insight into other industry jobs. It’s likely your apprenticeship will allow you to learn about other relevant jobs, such as labouring, construction site surveying, construction management, civil engineering technology, logistics, materials and CAD systems.
A typical day
Your normal working week will consist of 40 hours, Monday to Friday. One of those days will be spent attending an FE college. The tasks that engineers do day to day varies meaning that there is no ‘typical’ day outline, and a lot will depend on how your employer rotates you around sites and working teams. The apprenticeship will give you a broad understanding of the skills you need and the options open to you to make progress in your chosen field.
Useful interests and qualities
Having good communication skills and the drive to work hard and grab any opportunities that come your way to advance your skills is important. Further exams and assessments to gain your professional Chartership will be necessary if you wish to become a fully qualified civil engineer.
Ideally, you’ll have GCSE grades A-C in English, maths and science.. Not to worry if you don’t, there may be an opportunity to re-sit your maths and English exams before embarking on an apprenticeship. IT is also useful to the industry.
Pay and prospects
As an engineering apprentice, you can expect to be paid £15,000. A qualified engineer may earn between £17,000 and £25,000 per year. Experienced engineers can earn up to £50,000 and a senior chartered engineer would normally earn more than that.
